Some mobile phones contain precious metals such as gold and silver, and also toxic substances such as cadmium and mercury. If they end up in landfill, these could leak and pollute the surrounding environment. One mobile phone battery could be powerful enough to pollute 600,000 litres of water. So, recycling your mobile phone will help to protect the environment.
